The other side
Hiring by exam and credential came in because the older system ran on birth and patronage. That shift was real, and it is still visible. A surgeon's competence gets checked. A plumber who does bad work loses customers. Effort and skill move people, imperfectly, in every generation, and most adults can name someone in their family who did it. Calling the arrangement a lie flatters everyone who never tried.
