DIE ON THIS HILL

Who runs this

This site asks you to put a name on an opinion in public and pay for the privilege. It would be a poor site to run anonymously.

Eetu Karppanen

I am one person in Helsinki. I build small websites in the evenings, most of them about the same thing: what people choose, and what they will admit to choosing.

This one is a side project and is run like one. There is no team, no support queue, and no roadmap I am going to pretend to have. There is an inbox I read.

@kyyjonssoni is me, and it is the fastest way to establish that a real person is behind this before you spend anything.

What else is live

Not a portfolio. They are here because they load, which is the cheapest evidence available that the person running this finishes things.

playmoneyquiz.com
How much money would it take for you to do something you would rather not. Answer, then see what everyone else wanted.
yeahbutnobut.com
This or that. Two buttons, no middle option, no way to explain yourself.
sananlaskuja.fi
Finnish proverbs, in Finnish. Older than the rest and unrelated to any of it.

Where this one came from

playmoneyquiz asks what it would take to buy something off you. A number, for a thing you would rather not do. People answer that question far more honestly than they answer any question about their values, because a price is specific and a value is not.

The obvious inversion never got built, so this is it. Not what you would take money to do. What you would pay to keep saying.

An opinion held for free costs nothing and proves nothing. Everyone has hundreds. Put 1 dollar behind one, in public, under a name, where a stranger can take it off you by paying more, and it stops being a thing you have and starts being a position you are defending. That is the whole idea. The rest of the site is bookkeeping.

Before you pay anything

Someone else holds the money
Payments run through Polar, which is the merchant of record. Your card details are typed into their checkout and never touch this site or its database. The company behind the account is Huilata Oy, a registered Finnish company, and it is the same company named on the privacy page.
Two refunds happen without anyone deciding
If somebody beats you to a hill by a few seconds, or the payment that arrives does not cover the claim, the money goes back automatically and you get an email saying so. Neither one waits for me to read anything.
The record is public and so is the price
Every hill shows who holds it, what they paid, and everyone who held it before them. Nothing about the ranking is hidden or adjustable, because the number it sorts by is the number you paid.
The board starts with my own money on it
A board with nothing on it gives a visitor nothing to take, so I seeded it. The first hills are held under my own name, bought through the same checkout as anyone else at the same price, and not written into the database by hand. Every hill I hold is marked as mine: on the hillโ€™s own page, on the leaderboard, and in every list it appears in. Pay 1 dollar more and it is yours.
Nobody can take your hill for an hour
A new holder cannot be dethroned for 60 minutes, so the cheapest possible outcome, paying and losing it instantly, is one the site does not allow.

The rules for removals, takedowns and the refunds that are not automatic are on the terms page, stated as rules rather than as reassurance.

What I am not going to claim

That this is popular. It is new. If you want to know how much money has moved through it and who is holding what, the leaderboard is the whole ledger and it is not curated. Read it and decide for yourself.

That it will run forever. One person, evenings. What I will do is say so on this page if that changes, rather than letting the domain go quiet.

A name, an inbox, and a public ledger. It is not much. It is more than most of the sites this one is listed next to can show you.

Reaching me

help@thishill.lol. Removals, takedowns, bugs, and arguments about whether a hill is a real hill. A person reads it.
