DIE ON THIS HILL

Terms

This site takes money from strangers and publishes their names on purpose. These are the rules of that. Every one of them is a rule the site already runs, not a promise about a future version of it.

What you are buying

A position on a hill, and a permanent line in that hill’s record.

The position is temporary by design. You hold it until someone pays at least $1.00 more than you, and that can happen 60 minutes after you take it or never. Nobody, us included, can tell you which. That uncertainty is the product. If you want a thing that stays yours, this is the wrong purchase.

The line in the record is the part that lasts. When you are dethroned, your name, your stake, and how long you held it stay in that hill’s history. That is the delivered article and it is delivered the moment your payment settles.

What the money does, in order

An unclaimed hill costs $1.00. A held hill costs the holder’s stake plus at least $1.00. You can pay more than the minimum, and paying more only means you are more expensive to remove.

The payment is taken by Polar, which is the merchant of record. Your card details are typed into their checkout and never reach this site. Their terms cover the transaction; this page covers what happens on our side of it.

Nothing is published until the payment settles. Between pressing the button and the money landing, your flag does not exist.

When money comes back on its own

Two refunds are automatic. Nobody decides them and nobody has to be asked.

Someone beat you to it
Two people can pay for the same hill seconds apart. Only the first payment to land takes it. The second is refunded in full, automatically, and told so by email. Your flag never went up and nothing about you was published.
The payment did not cover the claim
If the amount that actually arrives is less than the amount the claim declared, it does not crown anyone and it is refunded automatically.

A refund goes back to the card that paid, through Polar, and takes as long as your bank takes. If you were owed one of these and it has not arrived, that is a fault worth writing to us about.

What a flag may not say

You write two things: a name and one line. The name does not have to be your legal name. Neither may contain slurs, attacks on people for what they are rather than what they think, threats, sexual content involving minors, another person’s private information, or links.

An automatic filter runs before your payment is taken, and it is a blocklist rather than a judgment. It will let things through. When it does, the rule above is still the rule, and the flag comes down.

Opinions are not the problem and are not moderated. Hills about politics, money, religion and taste are the point of the site. Disagreeing with a great many people is a valid use of it.

When a claim comes down, and what happens to the money

You ask for your own claim to come downNo refund
You bought the position and you held it. Taking your own flag down is a change of mind, not a fault on our side. The hill returns to whoever held it before you, or to nobody.
We take it down for what it saysRefunded in full
The name or the one line broke the rule below. You do not get to keep the position, and we do not get to keep the money. Both go back.
A third party has it taken downRefunded in full
Someone named on your flag asked for it to be removed and we agreed. Same outcome as above, and for the same reason: you paid for a position that no longer exists.
The hill itself is removedRefunded in full
An entire hill can turn out to be a bad idea. If it goes, every live claim on it goes, and every live claim on it is refunded.

There is no admin screen behind any of this. Every removal is a person editing the database by hand, so expect a reply from a human and not an instant confirmation.

If you are named on a hill and did not put yourself there

Write to help@thishill.lol. Link the page and say what the problem is. You do not need an account, you do not need to have paid us anything, and you do not need a lawyer to write it for you.

Removed on request, without argument: your name, your handle, your photograph, your contact details, or anything that identifies you personally, wherever it appears in a claim.

Not removed on request: an opinion you disagree with, or a hill about a public argument you happen to be on one side of. That is what the site is for. If a stranger paid a dollar to say something you think is wrong, the answer available to you is the same one available to everybody, and it costs $1.00 more than they paid.

Between those two there is a real middle, and it gets read by a person rather than a policy.

The record, and why it is not edited quietly

A hill’s history is append-only. Holders are added to it and are not removed from it when they are dethroned, because being dethroned is the thing the record is recording.

The exceptions are the ones above: a claim that broke the content rule, a claim naming somebody who asked to be taken out of it, and a hill that should not have existed. Those come out properly, not by being rewritten to say something else.

Everything else stays. That is the entire thing you are paying for, and a record that can be quietly edited is worth nothing to the person who bought a place in it.

What this site does not promise

That it will exist forever. It is run by one person. If it closes, the honest thing is to say so here first rather than to let the domain lapse quietly, and that is the intention.

That you will keep a hill. You will not. Someone will pay more.

That the site will always be reachable. It is a small site on ordinary hosting.

You are buying a position you will lose and a line that stays. Both halves are on purpose.
