The rule works by separating the people who can be lost from the people who must be seen daily. Break it and a bad ending stays in the room. The same standup meeting, the same Sunday climbing group, forever. Someone usually leaves the job or the friend group, and it is rarely the one with more seniority. That exit cost is real, and it lands before the first date does.
