The other side
Endowments grew because governments would not fund unglamorous work like rural clinics and hospice beds. Whatever the donor felt while signing, the beds got staffed. Motive is invisible. The staffing rota is public. And most giving happens nowhere near the donor class, in collection plates and casserole dishes, from people whose wealth nobody has ever accused of anything.
