The word sets an expectation on the employer first. A founder who says family in a room of thirty has just made a promise witnessed by thirty people, and people hold him to it when layoffs come up. Plenty of small shops honor it. Rent covered during a bad month. Manipulation requires that nobody can collect on the debt.
