The other side
A dying grandparent gets bathed and fed for years by relatives who inherit nothing. That labour built the household before any market existed. Contracts run on trust that no contract can create, and the felt reluctance to cheat a stranger keeps the ledger honest when nobody is watching. Cooperation started with kin who could not repay. Self-interest arrived late. It inherited a species already cooperating.
