Most true crime works backward from a conviction: timelines, evidence logs, what the detective missed. The pleasure is procedural. Families of murdered people have gone to podcasters after police stopped returning their calls, because a large audience produces tips. Fear of being hurt is a reasonable thing to study. Attention paid to an unsolved case is often the only attention left.
