Paying for the commute hands the employer a say in where people live. A worker who chooses a cheaper house an hour out becomes expensive, and the candidate down the road gets the job. Firms offset the extra hours by trimming wages. That cost lands hardest on people with the least housing choice. Distance becomes a hiring filter.
